Bear Cave BJJ - Ballarat

Trent “Bear” Rice is a multidisciplinary martial artist, holding six (6) different black belts and other senior ranks across Karate, BJJ, Kendo, Iaido, Filipino Escrima, Okinawan Kobudo and Jissen Budo.

Bear began his BJJ training with his Karate teacher, Sensei Glenn Sandford. Through Sensei Glenn he was introduced to John Will and has had the honour of training directly under Sensei John for nearly 20 years. He has competed and placed in State and National Level competition, in every coloured belt division, every year since 2001. In 2016 he finished with Gold in Black Belt Open Weight Divisions at both the Arnold BJJ Classic and at the Will-Machado Asia Pacific Championships (The Gathering).

But the shiny things really don’t matter.

It is as an instructor, both at HQ in Ballarat and with his other Bear Cave BJJ students that Trent gains the most from his training. “I believe that no knowledge is truly your own until you can give it away. By sharing the detail of this amazing art and passing on the philosophy and life lessons I’ve learned along the way, I believe that I have gained an understanding that I would never have reached through my study alone. My teachers, my students, and the friendships I have made through the martial arts are amongst the most valuable treasures I have.”
